My friend reset his laptop to factory settings, so I said I would do all the Windows Updates for him. One of those updates was Windows Service Pack 1. After successfully installing it, I scanned for any more updates. It keeps saying '1 important update' and that update is always Windows Service Pack 1. Why does it keep doing this when it is already successfully installed?

I have installed optional updates with no problems either. Just this Service Pack 1. When I look at the update history, Windows Service Pack 1 has been successfully installed about ten times. Any ideas?

I think this will cause problems for future updates.

What OS? Windows 7 at a guess...

Click start, in the "search programs and files" type "msconfig.exe" and click the "services" tab. Put a tick in the "hide all Microsoft services" and then "disable all"

Reboot the machine

If running an antivirus you should disable this for the moment.

try again to install the updates.

If in doubt, contact a qualified insured legal professional (or my wife... she knows EVERYTHING)

If the above doesn't work, then uninstall the update through start - control panel - Programs and Features - View Installed Updates.

It should be listed under Microsoft Windows as Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KBxxxxxx)

Hint - list them in alphabetical order. The groupings stay the same, but then it should be between Security Update... and Update for Microsoft Windows.

It's normal. Windows will try to update in chunks. Alternatively delete all cookies, close the browser and rescan for more updates. Even better setup automatic updates.

Thanks for all your inputs, especially to Locotus. That method worked great, and now I only have about another million updates to do. Including Windows Service Pack 2 lol.

Thanks again.
