It seems that people taking out Pension plans in 1988 and before, were subject to a new Tax ruling which was announced by the GOV in 1989.

TSB informed clients of existing policies that they would be disadvantaged by the new rules and suggested that a higher payment to receive equal benefits would be required.

In their terms and conditions for those original contracts,TSB listed a scale for entitlements and payments.

When the new TAX rulings were announced,TSB informed existing clients that they needed to take out new policies. What they should have done was invite clients to move to an existing payment option which they had running which would involve higher premiums but give a higher return.

The new agreements which TSB informed clients needed to be taken up,offered substantially lower returns by equasion than those offered at the higher end of the original terms and conditions.
