Basic bank account holders at Barclays face more frequent charges if they fail to have sufficient funds in their accounts. --- Basic accounts, often opened by those with a chequered credit history, do not offer cheque books or overdrafts. ---- At present, there is a maximum charge of £8 a day if direct debit or standing order payments exceed the total funds in the account. ---- However, from March, this could increase to up to £24 a day.------------ http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16072694

They have to start saving up for the next round of bonuses somehow or another! Notice it is those who are already under financial pressure who are being hit again!!

My RBS account has been changed so much as to make it virtually unusable, I can now only use RBS ATM's and the one near me is inside the branch so only can be used in bank hours :(.

No big deal as its my spare account, just used for Ebay stuff but I just laugh when I go in and they ask if I want to upgrade my account, etc..I just tell them how awful it is..and maybe throw in a moan about Fred The Shred and that taxpayers bailed them out :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a basic account with Barclays, they sent me a letter the other day telling me of new charges. However, there was also a paragraph in there which no one has mentioned that "If they (Barclays) feel that you are in a position to have a current account based on your financial situation and the way you manage your account they will it seems to me force you to have a current account.

I do not want a current account I like a basic account and will probably be a credit check with those awful credit reference agencies. I am furious with Barclays and I am thinking of going to The Co Op bank.

Can they make me have a current account?

Some banks are doing the exact opposite to current

account customers and changing their accounts to

basic ones, I guess in your case the Ts&Cs say they

can do this.

Any Letters I Draft are N0T approved by CAG and no personal liability is accepted.
