I requested my statements from HSBC, and when they came each one had 'total charges' on it, which was a cumilation of penalty charges and legit fees. So I phoned up to ask for a breakdown and this is the letter I recieved today...

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding a detailed report of all the charges incurred on your account since the account was set up.

We would be grateful if you could contact us directly on 08457 404 404 during normal working hours to confirm whether you wish to proceed with the service which will incur a charge of £35.00 per hour.

Alternatively you can order account charges statements from 2003 to date at £1.00 each with a maximum charge of £10.00.

We look forward to hearing from you.

My statements also said 'total charges,' with no indication of a breakdown. I would suggest using these for your total. If they wish to offer a breakdown at a later stage, that is up to them, but you can only work with what they provide. If they don't provide what you requested, then that is a reason to report them to the IC.
