Many of you, like me, may have innocently used a "trial" credit reference checking website. Despite my inital attempts I found it difficult to cancel and got stung by their monthly fee (which considering I was checking my file as I have been going through an overdrawn period did't help)!

As such I thought I would post how I resolved my cancellation and sought a refund.

Firstly you need a telephone number as they do not acknowledge letters even if like mine they are sent by registered mail.

The only one easily available is premium rate. However, none are shown on their website.

After using various searches online (don't say which great website for fear it gets banned) I discovered a UK landline number, which is usually free if calling form a mobile/landline with minutes/package.

Equifax: 020 7298 3000

Ask the switchboard for Customer Services. After the shock of speaking to an actual customer they will ask for comprehensive identity questions, then you simply ask how to cancel. They will say you have to call them and that it is in their terms and conditions when you take out the trial. Then ask where the number is on their website - they will ask you to hold. Then they come back to you, apologise that a number isn't on their website (which it isn't!) and offer a full refund.

Simples.

That is how to cancel EQUIFAX

I cancelled my Equifax subscription in June 2013, however it appears now that it was not cancelled but transferred to a different subscription for which there was a 12 month free trial after which a monthly charge of £2.99.

I only discovered this when checking my statement, and saw the charge. I rang up and cancelled immediately however they had already taken a 2nd month change. I ask for a refund as it was never explained to me that there was a 12 month trial and £2.99 monthly charge after, and they have mis-sold a product. Initially they have refused my request for a refund of £5.98.

Should I contact my bank saying they have taken unauthorised payments?

ben, if the money they took was unauthorised, then yes, contact your bank and request a refund.
