Ofcom has now brought to an end the trials of silent phone calls and is making it compulsory. Companies have 4 months in which to comply a rule that says no more than one phone call per day.

The important thing for subscribers of this forum is the 'No more than one call per day':

"Debt collection companies complained that they should be exempted, and that if they weren't then it would place customers at risk of running up greater debts, but Ofcom wasn't convinced"

Also of interest - "But Ofcom was unmoved and requires that within two seconds a human is on the line or a recorded announcement is played".

Nice one, funny how they always want the ball in their own courts.

It doesn't help debtors if they are continually called every day, most people I assume who are working are paid monthly and dont have changes to income every three months, so their calls are harrassment, and we know that the more people get called the more they google the company and then end up here.....

The result is the debt collection agencies are now having to work harder to maintain their profit margins on the toxic debts they have purchased...

Take note so that if you receive more than one call per day from a debt collector, you now have some authority to quote to make them stop and somewhere you can go to report them.

Last week, Parliament approved an increase in the financial penalty available to Ofcom to use to combat silent and abandoned calls, from £50,000 to £2 million.

As well as the action against Carphone Warehouse, Abbey National and Barclaycard, Ofcom has also taken enforcement action against Complete Credit Management Ltd, Equidebt Ltd, Ultimate Credit Services Ltd, Space Kitchens, Bracken Bay Kitchens and Toucan.
