Hi there,

Just been in my branch ( kept my head down ) paid in cheque and ask when it would clear, 6 working days, was the reply, unless you want to pay 12 quid and have it clear next working day, 12 quid cos they have to post cheque and phone to see if clear, cant understand how it costs this much for a stamp and phone call, is this just another way of making money from desperate people.

I think it's called express or special clearance - I know I used to make use of the facility a few years ago (at £2.50 a pop)

The gist (then) was that whilst the money was not ACTUALLY in your account, the Yes/No enabled the bank to act as guarantor to you drawing on the amount of the presented cheque. Effectively you were getting a two day limited extension to an overdraft, and paying interest to boot.

I'm surprised they still do this, but clearly they realise it is another great way to fleece their customers.

Of course.. The time it takes for cheques to clear is one of The Great Mysteries of the Universe.

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.
