I'm afraid that recommendations of solicitors are not allowed to be posted on CAG. Unfortunately I can't see a way out of this for you. Though you ticked the "couples" on the application, all award notices would have said that you had no partner; it was your responsibility to tell them within one month of receiving your award notices if anything was incorrect on them. If you didn't do this at the time, (your OP indicates you only informed them recently), or you have no evidence that you did inform them, there is no way out of it for you.

My advice is based on my opinion, my experience and my education. I do not profess to be an expert in any given field. If requested, I will provide a link where possible to relevant legislation or guidance, so that advice provided can be confirmed and I do encourage others to follow those links for their own peace of mind. Sometimes my advice is not what people necesserily want to hear, but I will advise on facts as I know them - although it may not be what a person wants to hear it helps to know where you stand. Advice on the internet should never be a substitute for advice from your own legal professional with full knowledge of your individual case.

Please do not seek, offer or produce advice on a consumer issue via private message; it is against

forum rules to advise via private message, therefore pm's requesting private advice will not receive a response.

(exceptions for prior authorisation)

i noticed that you first posted in 2009 regarding this issue, although i do find it shocking that this was left until £6000 in over payments had accrued, unfortunately as far as im aware any debt to the government is never statute barred and will always need to be paid back. if you are on benefits as far as im aware, according to your circumstances they will only take a certain percentage and wont leave you in hardship.

good luck
