Please disseminate the following communication to all team members:

Christmas brings happiness and joy to many people, but unfortunately the associated activities can result in death and injury

caused by accidents and fires in the workplace.

HAZARDS

FLAMMABLE MATERIALS

At Christmas, probably more than any other time of the year, flammable materials are in abundance in the form of:

Paper chains

Christmas cards

Foliage, both real and artificial.

Artificial Christmas Trees and garlands. In accordance with Health & Safety Executive regulations, these must be treated with

a fire retardant, that conforms to British Standards of: BS3229/20, BS476 Class 1, BS 5438, BS 5867 and certificated accordingly.

Other flammable hazards may include:

Displays and grottoes constructed from combustible materials.

Christmas trees, festooned with flammable articles, fairy lights and sometimes candles.

ELECTRICAL HAZARDS

The use of electrical Christmas lights and fibre optic trees is prohibited in this building.

VISUAL DISPLAY UNITS

Decorations placed on VDU's which obstruct the ventilation points can lead to overheating and break down of the electrical circuitry.

RISK POTENTIAL

Introducing easily ignitable and flammable materials into the workplace and placing them adjacent to ignition sources, such as electrical fittings and light bulbs, is clearly asking for trouble.

Overloading of electrical circuits are well known causes of fires.

ENVIRONMENT

The use of energy has an adverse effect on our environment and produces CO2 emissions.

PRECAUTIONS

Suspend Christmas decorations in a safe manner:

Away from ignition sources such as hot surfaces and naked flame.

Do not obscure exit signs, fire alarm break-glasses, fire extinguishers, sprinkler heads or smoke detectors.

Do not festoon wall and ceiling surfaces which should be resistant to the spread of flame.

Select safe areas for Christmas displays and trees. Do not block escape routes, stairways and exit doorways.

Review your fire safety procedures taking account of the additional hazards.

Remove all decorations from VDU's.

Unplug or switch off unwanted electrical equipment.

To help reduce energy consumption your co-operation to switch off electrical lights and systems when not required, contributes to good fire safety and reduces our CO2 emissions.

FIRE SAFETY REGULATIONS

Remember that we have to comply with Workplace Fire Safety Regulations, Insurers and Landlords conditions at all times .All persons are responsible to ensure we comply with these procedures.

We hope that this advice will help you, the people in your workplace, guests and customers, to have a safe and happy Christmas.

Read this twice and still can't decide if it's for real or a joke. Although knowing Health & Safety rules it's probably for real.
