I signed up to Scottish Power on a comparison site however after receiving their literature I telephoned to cancel as it was actually dearer than my current supplier.

Today I find out that they have ignored my cancellation and gone ahead and transferred me anyway and have sent me a prepayment card for my gas.

Any suggestions on best course of action?

try changing company again. comparioson sites and money advisors are wrong.

when u make a comparison, it only shows new deals for new customers which only occur for the first 3 - 6 months then prices go up to extreme lengths.

Its the best way to get new customers in, like teh advert for the NATWEST bank with mark benton, his bank is like the deals on energy suppliers, low rate for a while, rediculous rates after and cant get away.

my advice is to choose one and stick to them for ever, dont be fooled by the money advice experts or advertisements

Continue using your old card and not the new one Scottish sent. Ring them and then ring you proper company and tell them you will not use Scottish card and will not pay them.

Won't work I'm afraid. Regardless of which card is used the payments will go to Scottish.

The only thing that the OP can do is complain to their original supplier that its an erroneous transfer. I believe there's a time limit of 28 days for this though.
