  1. Id really appreciate some help on this, I always pay my bills and I'm annoyed I'm getting chased for this. The Problem Me and a room mate lived in a 2 bedroom flat, arrangements were made by a student only letting agency on behalf of the landlord. Before signing we were told we had each got £8 a week allowance for gas/elec/water, but that the landlord would be handling the water bills. A few weeks ago I got a letter from a debt collection agency saying I owe the water company for the property £260. I didn't respond to any letters from the water company because I haven't lived at the address for a year now and I wasn't expecting any letters in the first place. For some reason its addressed to me only, not me and my my room mate. I rung them up instantly and explained how the bill wasn't my responsibility (I maybe shouldn't of done this, this is my first time ever dealing with this sort of thing I always pay my bills), they put the case on hold for 14 days whilst they investigate, I rung up the letting agent and they emailed me a copy of the agreement we signed for the property, although they said they no longer have a signed copy, me or my roommate also do not have a signed copy, I kept it for months and just got rid of it recently as I thought i wouldn't need it. I sent them the unsigned version, they said it wasn't enough. I went to the lettings agency and got them to provide a signed letter that states that the unsigned contract I had shown them was in place during the dates they provided and that it was the landlords responsibility (attached to this post), they replied saying that it is still not good enough and that I still needed to pay. They are constantly emailing me, I emailed back asking for an original invoice of the water bill addressed to me (Someones advice, I was sure they wouldn't have it as I never agreed to pay for water or expected one whilst living there) and I received an invoice today in the mail addressed to me. According to the invoice I owe Northumbrian water £160 however the agency is saying I need to pay them £260. More information: I also just noticed the letter the lettings has provided had the incorrect dates (16/17 instead of 15/16) on it which don't line up with those that the debt collectors have provided (when they should), I've emailed asking for a corrected version. Me and my room mate are still friends, if needed he was willing to still split the cost of the bill with me, id rather not have to do anything to jeopardise our friendship The invoice and letters are solely addressed to me for some reason I've done a credit check and this hasn't affected my credit score The dates provided by the credit agency for the water and the dates we lived there do line up I don't have any contact information for the landlord Any help will be greatly received, I will be monitoring and replying to this thread.
  2. I have been directed to this site from helpful MSE members. My OH drives to work Mon-Fri and stops in the same petrol station daily at the same time give or take a few mins to get his daily papers. On Saturday out the blue we had through the post to claims from http://www.campssolicitors.co.uk/ for a driver and passenger stating that my OH drove into them and drove off at this petrol station which he did not. At the time and date given he was in the petrol station and remembers the car in question as it was such a new 'posh' for want of a word car. He did not hit the car in any way. Nor is there any damage to our car so getting these solicitors letter for damage to the car from the driver and as a compensation claim for injuries to the passenger has come out of the blue. The driver is claiming for damage to his car, whiplash and shoulder pian but has had no time off work. The passenger again no time off work but has soft tissue damage and back pain. Neither sought medical attention. The car is not going to be a write off. Nor did they need a hire car. Not reported to the police. It also states that the claimant has undertaken a funding arrangement within the CPR rule on 16th December. So these are no win no fee solicitors. My hope was to obtain CCTV footage from the petrol station which he enquired about this morning. Staff have said that CCTV is not covered where this accident was. He tried phoning his insurance claim line Sat night but was told they couldn't help him as he wasn't making a claim so I have emailed them asking for advice. I am wondering why the 3rd party has gone to this no win company rather than his own insurance and surely his own insurance will sort out his car out for him? also surely if these gentlemen were hurt in such a way medical advice would be sought as you would want things to be officially documented with a personal injury claim. OH commutes daily and drives a
  3. Evening All, I'd appreciate a little guidance here. Firstly, I live in Scotland (in case that influences any advice). I was issued a bill for £107 for looking after the shrubs and bushes on the estate where I live (I have a 1/258 share to pay). Being honest I ignored previous letters as I don't recall signing for anything to do with this. Anyway, a County Court case was instigated by the Company, and due to go to Court 04/02/14. I work away from home, and returned, luckily, 03/02/14. I immediately called the Company, explained I worked away etc. and agreed to pay the money via a direct debit. Before agreeing to this I asked for confirmation the Court action the next day would be stopped. The Company then consulted their legal team, and said because it was close to the Court date there would be an additional £111 charge to stop it, which I agreed to, So, weeks passed, I heard nothing, until I got a letter telling me the case had gone ahead, and I now have a CCJ! I called the Company, who informed me: Accounts are off sick Their legal team are at fault, and they do not represent the company, therefore its not the company's fault Its my fault I haven't paid (which, in all honesty may have been right). The Court cant stop any action without 24 hours notice I reminded them I'd paid to have it stopped, and they'd taken payments from me. Silence from the other end, and a promise to call back. They then called me back and said they'd contact the Court and say the debt had been satisfied, now to me this is an admission of guilt. Heres my gripe: I'm just about to go for a mortgage after getting my credit rating to the dizzy height of 964, I checked Experian and in big red letters its got CCJ across the top. No mortgage for me then? So, what can I do? I'm actually willing to pay more to take the Company to court, as I've been financially disadvantaged by their error. I really want blood here, the casual attitude, and "so what" response has got me fuming (a Geordie word for angry!) Any advice gratefully received.
