  1. Half of Britons have not made a will, leaving them with no control over what will happen to their assets after they die, new research from Will Aid has revealed. Over a third (35%) of those without a will have children aged under 18, meaning they have no legal say in who would look after their children if they died. While young people are the least likely to have written a will, 19% of those aged over 55 have also neglected to make one, the charity's research reveals. 2. Hello, I have done some research on this forum (and others) and haven't found anyone in a similar situation. I have received a letter from BW Legal demanding payment of £174.00 for their client, Vehicle Control Services Limited, for a Parking Charge Notice (PCN). This 'PCN' was given as the car was 'Parked beyond the bay markings'. The letter has the standard 'fear' language such as 'if not paid we will commence legal proceedings' and 'If we gain a CCJ this will have a detrimental effect on your future creditworthiness and employability'. This letter is also signed 'BW Legal' rather than with an actual name, which I find odd. This was a free car park in Sheffield for Valley Centretainment customers (Which we were). We went to the cinema and restaurant there but parked on the end of a row of cars, which wasn't marked as a parking bay. There was no signage that clearly stated that cars must be parked in the bays and as it was a free car park for customers I refused to accept the charge. Back when the original letters were sent, I followed online recommendations to simply ignore the demands, and after several 'final notices' I heard nothing from them until now. The PCN was issued early 2012 (I've read on other threads that it is pre PoFA, but I don't fully know what that means). Doing some research now it seems that it might not be the best idea to continue ignoring these letters, however I don't want to respond to them after such a long time as it might trigger them to harass me or to 'continue with legal proceedings'. I would ask if anyone could suggest if I should respond, what response to give and the best way to respond (I presume all written/mailed rather than email). They have demanded I pay within 16 days of the date of the letter, which was a few days before I even received the letter, or they will carry out with proceedings with the County Court Claim. Thank you for reading my post and I appreciate any help/suggestions given.

  5. Smart Parking have just taken over the parking at the local retail park and the cost is the same as before, 50p for two hours and £1 for 4 hours. They have introduced a new system whereby your reg is photographed on entry and exit and you need to put your full reg into the pay machine and display the ticket. However, if you use the gym in the retail park then there is no charge, there is a Smart Parking computer in the gym where you have to input your reg, but you get no ticket, the message simply says parking validated. I went to the gym but input my reg incorrectly by one digit i.e.64 instead of 63. I subsequently received a fine for £60 reduced to £36 if paid promptly. I appealed stating that I had no intention of avoiding the cost as it was in fact free to park. I pointed out that they could check that I had entered the wrong reg as they could see that on their system and also no car with the incorrect reg had entered or left. I assumed my appeal would be upheld as it seemed a fairly simple mistake that could easily be checked. Of course I left the car park in plenty of time. My appeal was dismissed on the grounds that I had failed to validate the vehicle and the parking charge was issued within the terms and conditions. Can it be that I must pay £60 for car parking that is free to users of the gym just because of an error that can easily be checked? Any views would be appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

  7. If you've not upgraded to Windows 10, and are thinking of doing so, then you'll have to get your rear in gear as Microsoft have announced that they're ending the free upgrade on 29th July. Previously there had been speculation that Microsoft might extend the 12 month free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and 8 users. If you upgrade after that, it'll cost you upwards of £80 (there's no official UK pricing as yet) to get Windows 10. If you're buying a new device, it'll come installed on the machine as standard. The good news is that Microsoft will finally turn off that annoying 'Get Windows 10' app that pesters Windows 7 and 8 users into upgrading to Windows 10. http://www.bitterwallet.com/freebies/no-more-free-windows-10-upgrade-after-july-91964

  9. 68% of eligible two year olds in England are missing out on free childcare, which they're perfectly entitled to. Are you one of the parents missing out on this? Figures from the Department for Education show that huge numbers of kids are missing out on the free 15 hours of childcare per week, with estimates showing 78,552 in total. Of course, there's criteria you'll have to meet, but if you do, you really should utilise this. What Do You Need To Know? If you claim Jobseeker's Allowance, or similar, you could be eligible. Basically, funded education has been extended to include two-year-old children a while ago, but parents have failed to maximise the benefits of new rules for their kids, mainly because they're unaware they can do so. Your two-year-old can get free early education and childcare if you receive one of the following: Income Support Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) Universal Credit Tax credits and you have an annual income of under £16,190 before tax The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit Support through Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act The Working Tax Credit 4-week run-on Or, your child can qualify if any of these apply: A local council looks after them They have a current statement of special education needs (SEN) or an education, health and care (EHC) plan They get Disability Living Allowance They've left care under a special guardianship order, child arrangements order or adoption order To find out whether or not you're entitled to this free childcare, then you need to enter your postcode here on this government website. http://www.bitterwallet.com/freebies/are-you-missing-out-on-free-childcare-92561
  10. I am hoping to purchase a new TV soon, looking online there are few companies like John Lewis and Richer Sounds offering a free 5 or 6 year guarantee instead of the standard manufacturers 12 month warranty. This seems to be to good to be true, what are the catches if any?

  12. Eaga plc that runs Warm Front is giving me a rough ride. They are denying me, heating improvements under the Govt scheme. The boiler is a floor standing Potterton Kingfisher RS50 installed when the flat was built in 1963. The Assessor took a glance at the boiler and told me that it is too old and promised me that the boiler will be replaced. He gave me a glossy brochure about the steps they will take to make improvements such as replacement boiler. The Assessor asked me to sign a Client Declaration. I trusted him and made the mistake of signing it without reading. He told me that I will receive a copy of the letter that they send to my landlord. But the landlord or I heard nothing. Then I noticed that on the back of the form that I was asked to sign, the only ‘assessor recommended improvement’ is compact fluorescent light bulbs. After number of phone calls to Warm Front and long waits, I was told that my landlord is responsible for heating, eventhough no one at Warm Front (including the assessor) has read the tenancy agreement. Their ‘landlord is responsible’ stance is based on the mis-interpretation of something I said. They are also disregarding the fact that I have been paying for annual check-ups and maintenance of the boiler for the last eight years. I was asked for past receipts; though I no longer have them. I offered to send them the tenancy agreement. But was told that it will not be valid any longer, because the landlord and I might now change it to suit. I was also told on the phone that the boiler will be replaced only if does not work and can’t get spares to repair it. Where can I get a copy of the rules and regulations that from the basis of their decisions? Is there an appeal procedure independent of Eaga plc who will hear my case? Any other course of action? Many thanks.
  13. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/the-simple-westpac-banking-error-that-gave-christine-jia-xin-lee-46-million-20160520-gozv5q.html Unbelievable true story linked above, where an Aussie Bank provided a young Lady with an overdraft of over £2 million pounds. It only picked up the error, when she made 14 transactions on Paypal on one day. I suspect that if convicted in a court, she will end up in Prison, but this Bank will struggle to recover much of the loss. Nb. Sorry to those people who clicked on this thread thinking that a free £2 million overdraft was available:madgrin:
  14. Lloyds customers are losing their free, interest-paying current accounts and told to sign up for one at £60 a year. Loyal Vantage current account holders will no longer receive interest of up to 1.49 per cent from May 3. If they want to earn interest they must opt for the Club Lloyds account, which pays up to 3.93 per cent on balances of up to £5,000. It also offers access to a savings account paying the same and a 0.2 percentage point reduction on Lloyds mortgages, plus perks such as free cinema tickets. But customers will be hit with a £5 monthly bill unless they pay in £1,500 a month. 15. Hello everybody, I recently purchased a guitar effects pedal from a store over the internet via PayPal. I sent it back the next day during the cool-off period. The shipping in the online ad states free delivery. They have refunded me the cost of the item minus £6.99 for postage. I did a quick web search and came up with: The Office of Fair Trading; “The OFT’s view is that the normal postage and packing charges for the delivery, but not the return, of distance sales purchases must always be refunded in addition to the cost of the goods when orders are cancelled during the cooling-off period.” From Out-law.com: “Online shopping customers who send back goods straight away must not be charged for their delivery, Europe's top court has said. Consumers can be required to pay the cost of returning the goods but should be refunded every other cost, it said. 15 Apr 2010” “The UK's Distance Selling Regulations govern this right and consumer regulator the Office of Fair Trading has previously ruled that refunds must include the cost of postage or delivery of goods.” I contacted the store with this information and they sent me the following reply: "Thank you for your email and I do appreciate your point of view If you change your mind, you can return your purchase in its original condition within 14 days to us for a full refund minus any costs incurred for the initial dispatching using our express courier and any costs incurred by -------- for the returning of the order. Please note that shipping discounts are removed if your full return or partial return takes your order below the free delivery threshold (this only applies for items that have been sent). Orders which have received discounted shipping (for example, free next day shipping) will have to cover the initial express courier dispatching, normally £6.99. The fact that you received free shipping is because we applied a shipping discount to your order and paid this shipping as a goodwill gesture. We do not ship item via any standard (normal) delivery options and ship everything using express next day service therefore we are entitled to recoup any delivery costs from the refund. I am afraid that the £6.99 deduction is correct and does not breach any consumer rights. So, are they correct to deduct the postage or not? I would be very grateful for any answers to help me resolve this. Thanking you all in advance, Nigel
  16. UK mobile networks look set to be forced to make it free to unlock phones at the end of customers' contracts, it was announced in The Budget. Currently, each major network offers different options to consumers who want their phone unlocked, with most charging for the privilege. Unlocking a phone allows customers to switch networks as they please. Following this week’s Budget, the government says that all mobile users should be able to have their handset unlocked at the end of their deal without paying. While it is hoping to get networks to sign up voluntarily, the government has promised to pass laws to force networks to comply if an agreement can’t be reached. http://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/news/2016/03/mobile-networks-set-to-be-forced-to-unlock-phones-for-free/?utm_campaign=insight&utm_content=160321&utm_medium=email&utm_source=uswitch&utm_term=mobiles-content-pod
  17. Hi All, I have been browsing the forums for a while and am finally in a position to aim to repair my credit file. This is where I stand at the minute: £428 - Lowell - Showing as Defaulted in 2014(not sure of original creditor) £767 - Kapama - this a payday loan and is FAR FAR higher than original debt to i beleive minicredit - Defaulted 2014 £216 - Myjar - Defaulted 2016(don;t understtand this as had no contact since February 2015) £77 - Lowell - Defaulted 2014, again, unsure of original creditor £251 - MKDP - Defaulted 2011 - Again, unsure of original creditor# £291 - British Gas - Defaulted 2014 £1368 - British Gas - Defaulted 2014 £865 - British Gas elec - Defaulted 2014 As you can see I was in quite a mess but I aim to sort this out. I have got kind of lost within the forums and wonder if anyone would be able to respond or DM me on where to start. The questions I have are many but start with, how do I check original creditors with the debts that are with the likes of Lowell, Kapama and mkdp. I know I need to send them CCA requests but the issue I have is I beleive a couple of them are for debts that I have had no contact with since around 2009 so past the 6 year statute. so how can lowell etc re-add a default that the original creditor already defaulted me on.? 18. Hi Bakatcha, The reason why I am contacting you is connected with my own dilemma with INGEUS!! I have been out of work for sometime & it's tough. The job centre has placed me on a mandatory work program with INGEUS & sadly it's lasted longer than expected. My advisor is using unorthodox ways to find work for me and somewhat intrusive. My advisor thinks it's a good idea if he watches me use the computer when I search/apply for jobs and he also wants me to possibly visit INGEUS on a daily basis. He also thinks it's a good idea if he applies for vacancies without me performing this task and I strongly disagree with that! He even suggested that I sit down with him & log onto my email account so he can check all the jobs I apply for each week, unacceptable in my opinion and I wondered what you make of this.
  19. When Talktalk were hacked last year, they offered customers a free upgrade as compensation. They were able to add one of the following to their existing services with the group: TV content including movies, kids entertainment and sports; A mobile SIM with a monthly allowance of free texts, data and calls; Unlimited UK landline and mobile calls; A broadband health check by experienced engineers Turns out that far from free, Talktalk have been charging some customers TalkTalk customers should check their bill closely if they accepted a free upgrade, and make sure they are not paying for it. http://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/feb/01/talktalk-hacking-free-sim-offer-apology-charge
  20. My elderly disabled mum has got a new tablet (gawd help me) She thought she'd asked for a free sample of anti wrinkle cream from a site called worldfithelp.com It came, she tried it and of course, was useless. This month she's had 2 payments taken from her card, £89.90 and £92.85! I've just called the company based in Aurora Illinois and have been told she signed up for a monthly subscription. I explained she obviously didn't know what she was doing. She's 75 and never used a computer before, they have only agreed to reimburse the 2nd payment taken once they receive the parcel back! Is there anyway I can get my mums money back and report this company?:mad2:
  21. BT has said it will launch a new service later this year to divert nuisance calls within its network before they ring on customers' phones. It said it will use huge computing power to root out 25 million unwanted calls a week. Currently, BT customers can buy special phones that block nuisance calls, or pay to stop calls getting through. But the new service will identify some of the 5 billion unwanted calls made each year before they arrive. They will then be diverted automatically to a junk voicemail box. Customers will be able to add numbers they don't want to hear from, for free. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-35545914 BT offers 'breakthrough' service to divert 'huge numbers' of nuisance calls Most people receive an unwanted telephone call every month, mainly about PPI or personal injury claims, automated marketing messages or sales. Now a BT team will monitor calls to our 10 million domestic customers and identify any patterns of callers. The "rogue" numbers will be diverted to a junk voicebox, which we estimate will affect up to 25 million unwanted calls a week. If you’re a BT customer, you’ll also be able to divert the calls yourself to the "Blacklist". The service will launch later this year, harnessing huge computer power to analyse data. http://home.bt.com/news/bt-life/bt-offers-breakthrough-service-to-divert-huge-numbers-of-nuisance-calls-11364039280071
  22. Nine High Street banks and building societies in the UK are to launch basic bank accounts which will not charge a fee for missed payments. The new accounts will be available from 1 January to people who fail to qualify for a full current account. But current basic bank account holders may not be automatically switched to a fee-free account – so you should contact your provider to check Users of the new accounts will also qualify for a debit card, which they can use to shop online, or at cash points. But they will not be able to run up an overdraft. Nine banking groups have agreed to offer fee-free basic bank accounts: Barclays – Barclays Basic Current Account The Co-operative Bank – Cashminder HSBC – Basic Bank Account Lloyds Banking Group (Bank of Scotland, Halifax and Lloyds) – Basic Account National Australia Bank Group (including Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank) – Readycash Account Nationwide – FlexBasic RBS Group (NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank) – Foundation Account and Basic Account (England and Wales) Santander – Basic Current Account TSB – Cash Account http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-35168705
  23. Following the hack of their website, Talktalk are offering a free upgrade for all their customers. The type of upgrade offered would depend on the kind of package customers already had. For example, customers with TV packages might be offered a sports channel that they did not already have. Customers will be able to choose their free upgrades between 1st December and 31st December In addition, a new bundle of online and telephone security features to improve your protection from s cammers, malware and cold callers will be offered free of charge. http://www.talktalk.co.uk/customerupgrade/?refresh=true
  24. Orange is facing a revolt from hundreds of customers furious at the phone giant's decision to axe a promise of free broadband midway through their contracts. The mobile operator announced in August it would cut free home broadband for up to 90,000 mobile customers unless they fork out an extra £160.50 a year for a landline. Now many who signed up to the expensive, lengthy deal to qualify for the perk are fighting back with threats of legal action — and forcing the company to change its mind. After being faced with claims that it breached contracts, Orange has begun to quietly settle with a number of customers.
