We purchased a poodle puppy in Sept 2020,
it was a rare colour and at the time worth a lot of money (probably still are with the price of pups!!)
anyway when feeding the dogs my adult cocker spaniel got in to abit of a scuffle with the puppy, the fight lasted 5 seconds if that!
the puppy unfortunately ended up with a broken lower jaw, he was taken to vets, xrayed etc and had to spend the night in the vet hospital,
the next day i was told 2 option surgery or pain killers and hope the jaw re sets its self.
I thought pain killers and hoping for the best seemed very wrong so enquired about the cost of surgery etc was told surgery wasnt done in house and required to be sent to a specialist and would get a price for me asap.
they rang back with a price of £3500! wich was well above what I could pay the time as my wife had just been made redundant.
we said we would have to opt for the painkillers route to which we were told was no longer an option and the dog urgently needed surgery,
asked if they could possibly split the bill over a couple of months, they said no, however you can sign the dog over to us, we will then send the dog to trust who will pay for the surgery and rehome him.
As much as we loved the pup and the kids were attached to him we had paid over £2500 for him plus £600 vet bills so far so it was hard but we thought the best possible thing we can do is sign the dog over that way he gets the urgent surgery he needed.
a week later we rang the vets just to try and find out how he was and if he made i through the surgery etc, receptionist said some 1 will ring back later.
The practice owner rang us back asking what we wanted to know, we said we just wanted to know that he had made it through the surgery etc, to be told he didnt get referred to surgeon and the practice manager decided to keep him and look after him her self, she said shes been taking the dog home and keep a close eye on him and has him sleeping on her bed etc.
shocked by this after been told he needed extensive surgery i sent an email stating my concerns that we had singed the dog over on the basis he needed surgery that day,
i was basically told they couldnt get him signed to a trust do their in house vet re aligned the jaw the best
she could then put the dog on pain killers and she has been looking after him her self and will be paying the costs from her own pocket.
she then said if i pay them for the time the dogs been in their care plus the cost of the pain killers etc i could have him back
I asked for a full vet report and copys of xrays etc to see what he has had done and to get a 2nd opinion on the cost that shes asking for, was told shes not prepared to send me them, and ive got 24hrs to pay just short of £3000 to get him back.
my wife and kids were very upset and didnt want to pursue this any more, however I cant help but feel we should of took this further, should I have or could I still?
I do still have copy's of emails etc...
