I do not know if this is the right forum but I need some advice.

My father has double glazing on his windows and also replaced the front door however the door on the house not what companies called 'standard' sized. When he ordered the door after looking through a brochure, the company he picked measured the previous door for the size however when they came to fit the door they ended up putting a big sort of plastic cast andd then the door.

The door is a lot smaller than the previous one which is why they had to fill the space with the plastic. They did not inform my dad that they did not have a door that was similar in size to the previous one and just said that it was a 'standard size' door they fitted. My dad is very unhappy with this and has asked to have it removed as it makes the inside of the house look smaller and blocks out the light.

When he asked for it to be removed, the company said that in order to fit a bigger door they would have to cut inside the the wooden door frame, which by the way is where they have placed the plastic cast and it would cost my father more money for this door. They also said that they would lose money as they would have to wait until someone wanted his door and sell it as second hand.

As far as I am aware, the company would not lose as my father has already paid for this door and in order to have another one fitted he would have to pay again. The company would have the money for the first door and also the second door and from selling the first door.

My father is elderly and I think they are taking advantage of him which I am not very happy with. Any advice on this??

The doors do come in standard sizes. They should have explained this to him.

See if the UPVC door installers are members of any trade organisation that can help. Can your Father enter into some form of dispute resolution service ? Can you get advice locally from a company that manufactures doors and installs them. This is purely to see what was possible.

There may be a case that could be made under sale of goods act, but you have work to do to prove your case.

We could do with some help from you.

Off the shelf doors come in standard sizes, but it is possible to get custom sizes made to measure. Any respectable installer should have been able to get one made. Google will turn up plenty of sites advertising custom composite (uPVC) doors.

If the OP's father had been quoted for a custom door, and an off the shelf has been bodged in, then he'd have a claim. How was the job paid for - Cash or credit card ?

Perhaps upload a picture of the door shortwoman68...if the work was not completed to yours/fathers satisfaction then you need to seek recompense.I assume they gave a written quotation and contract?

Regards

Andy

Agree with above reply and would say that the response of the co0mpany regarding reselling door is nonsense. Either they quoted for a door which they took measurments for or they offered a standard size door and frame filling. the quote should say which but I suspect that they couldnt be bothered to do a proper job and thnk that an elderly man wont make too much of a fuss.

I would be writing to them to provide a door that replaces the original or yu will take action to recover the extra cost of getting one from elsewhere.

If they are a member of a trade association you should start making a complaint in that direction as well and if mwediation is offered be careful about the limits of the agreement.

I don't see why there couldn't have been a custom door made, I had all my windows and doors made to non standard specs !
