Hello everyone,

today I recieved a letter from the DWP debt management centre demanding payment for a balance of £200,

I contacted them and was told that this was for a crisis loan dating back to the year 2000 from when I wasn't working.

I'm pretty sure I paid this off but can't remember as it was so long ago.

Can they still chase for this and enforce it given how long ago it was?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Yes, the DWP can still chase this 'debt' if they believe it has not been repaid.

If you are sure you had settled the loan in full, send them a Subject Access Request

asking for all information held from the year 2000 to present including everything pertinent to this crisis loan.

Information on making a SAR: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dwp-request-for-personal-information

Note: No fee is charged for this, so make the most of it.

Once you have the information pack, you can pick over it to see if there are any notes indicating payment was made in full.

In the meantime, write back to the recovery team stating that you require further information and you will respond further once the SAR has been fulfilled.
