Have recently bought a new vehicle from a dealer, there was no tax with the car, but dealer said it is taxed until the end of July, and when checking on the direct.gov website it shows the vehicle as being taxed until end of July. Is it possible to get a duplicate tax disc? Have already attempted but they refused saying I was not registered keeper, but I will be when get the new V5C but this can take a while to be processed. Seems like DVLA want extra money for a vehicle that has already been taxed. Any ideas?

You should get the seller to obtain and pay for it. No way would I pick up a car they said was taxed and it had no disc.

You realise that you can't use the car on the road until it has a disc? It could be clamped if seen.

The dealer had purchased it through an auction who dispose of any tax discs in vehicles

Then it has no tax as you can't dispose of a tax disc except by returning it to the DVLA which any auction house would do to claim back the outstanding months and gain extra profit.

However and with whatever conditions the Dealers purchased it, these were his arrangements and have nothing to do with your own purchase contract with him.

If you both agreed the car was sold to you including road tax until July and it did not have that road tax, that is the Dealer's failing and he should overcome it.

And immediately too - for, as noted above, you should not use it on the roads without having BOTH valid tax and displaying a current road tax disc.

You cannot get a tax refund unless you are registered keeper which auction house were not

Sorry, you are correct.

If you know who the auction company were, then give them a ring as they keep all documents including the tax disc in the office until sold.

I can't think for the life of me why an auction house would dispose of tax discs when they'd need them for potential buyers. What purpose would it serve?

They don't caro, I erred there. The seller has the choice of to sell the car either with or without the tax. The auction house don't leave them on display in the car though, they are kept with the documents in the office.
