Anyone any idea how these new benefits will effect the claiming of a Motability car ,I seem to remember reading somewhere that the higher rate of DLA is to be abolished. If this is the case then nobody will qualify for the scheme as it is a requirement of it that you are in receipt of the higher rate of DLA

At present, Mobilty is a seperate component of DLA, therefore it is possible to have low rate middle rate or high rate care and high rate mobility which would give entitlemnt to a car should that be the claiment's choice. How it it will work in future is anyone's guess.

afaik, the proposals for PIP are that there will be a lower and higher rate mobility component. To qualify for the higher rate, you will need to score 12 points. To score 12 points you will have to be either entirely reliant on wheelchair use or so impaired as to make driving impossible anyway. A very large number of people who currently qualify for higher rate mobility on DLA will not qualify for higher rate PIP mobility. Looking at the criteria, I will score 10 points.

Anyone reassessed and fails to score 12 points will have their Motability vehicle taken back. This new system appears to actively discriminate against non-wheelchair users who have severe mobility needs.

Unless that is that they have a serious mental health problem to go with it. Then they can add the two scores to make the 12 points.

Being unable or virtually to walk + not being able to get from one place to another that you know well without guidance due to a mental health problem - in which case they wouldn't need a motability car as they wouldn't know where to go in it or how to get there!!
