Wescot Final Notice - British Gas HELP Please

Hello, i'm new here and didn't know if i needed to open a new topic, but here it goes...Last december someone from the BritishGas came to my house in the evening looking for somebody i did not know.

 

The house was a shared one. He read the meters and asked for the names of the people i live with. I gave him mine and 2 more, saying that i m not the landlord and giving him the name of the landlord and his phone number. After a couple of weeks i received a letter asking me to pay about £500 for utilities.I talked to my landlord asked him to call british gas to change the name from the bill.

 

After another week a letter from Wescot came demanding to pay the outstanding amount. I talked again to my landlord asking him to fix this, he said he called and told them that i am not paying the bills, giving them his name as he pays the bills.

 

I moved in february from there, and2 weeks ago i received a letter from Wescot "Address Verification" demanding me to call urgently on 0844 to update my info. And today i got a Final Notice letter. I thought everything was ok since my landlord talked with them.

 

I don't want to pay a penny as i paid my rent with bills included, and it was only a mistake that they put the bill to my name for one month.What should i do? do i ignore them hoping they will stop? i dont even know how they know my new address. i read some topics on them and i dont know what to do. help please with an advise! thank you

Do you have a copy of your tenant agreement showing that you were not responsible for the bills?

No because the Landlord did not want to make contracts at that time, i stayed there for a short while

Who were the Bills addressed to?

 

Don't deal with Westcott as they can't do anything as a 3rd party for a utility bill. You need to write to BG and explain what has happened.

 

Looks like the landlord has mugged you right off.

The bills weren't even on his name, he gave me a weird explanation, but he said at that time that he will fix it. After i moved i found out that the landlords name was not even his real name, he was using a different name for the bills, for the agencies, i don't know... Ok thank you for your advice

Have you though about reporting your private landlord to the authorities. Sounds a dodgy character.

Yes, my boyfriend told me not to get involved but now i am decided to do something about it.I've also talked with previous tenants, because this person is well known in this neighborhood.Some of them even complained to the police, but they did nothing until now.
