Hi, I have a friend in England (I live in Scotland) who has had toothache for 3 days. She's not registered with a dentist and has no cash. She's called NHS direct for help and they just give her numbers of dentists who they say are taking on patients, but she calls them and they're not. What can she do? Does the NHS have no responsibility towards her? I can't do anything from here as I can't call NHS direct for her (it's NHS 24 here.)

Help!

Hi

Her local PCT has a duty to provide her with a dentist. She should contact them and ask to speak to someone from dental commissioning. They will have the most up to date details of who is taking new patients. No point in using NHS Direct - they only use the info from NHS Choices and that is not normally up to date.
