  1. Hi, First of all I'd just like to say what a great site this is, I've been reading it for a long time now and the advice has really helped me in the past. I've got a quick question regarding Student Loans. I've still got two outstanding loans from 96 and 2001. I remember the T&C's changed between taking the two loans - for the one taken in the 90's it said something along the lines of 'if you never earn over the £24k annual threshold then the loan will be cancelled by the time you reach 40'. Also, how they were repaid - the 90's one was down to me to pay, the 2000's one was taken directly as PAYE. I've moved around a lot and have had no contact with Student Loans company since AT LEAST 2005. But student loans seem to be a special sort of debt, will my two loans now be statute barred. I'm scared to contact SLC in case it opens up a massive can of worms and they shout 'release the Kraken'. Thanks for any insight.
  2. I spoke on the phone today with the Student Loans Company (looking into how long I studied at the University of Liverpool.) He puts me on hold for a while comes back and says, 'you have to pay all of it' I was like 'all of what?' 'everything' I am really run down already with all the liverpool stuff and now this! He was making it sound like I'd illicitly studied a few times. Where my local student services had approved it, based on my health and everything that was going on. I thought I wanted to study but I really didn't know what I want. Have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Cant even remember these times they are talking about. Now it seems, that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter I never earned over 15k or have done nothing different. I told him I only get 4k a year. I am told to call monday to offer repayments. It makes me nervous to offer repayments on 16k with 4k a year coming in. Of my spare money, that's about 100 years!! Do I SAR request them? I am going to my friends for a couple of weeks too so if they write or anything I wont know. I started a new threat as this is a different issue but sorry if you have to move it to my other post!
  3. Hello there, Staffordshire University suggested I contacted you regarding the ongoing and urgent issues I have with student finance. I have recently completed a BA Hons Geography at Staffordshire University. However, on the day I attempted to collect my results I was told I was ineligible as my tuition fees for 2009/2010 had not been paid. This was to be paid through a tuition fee loan from the student loans company. 12 months ago they cancelled this loan in error. Despite numerous reassurances and complaints over the last 12 months, and importantly - for no good reason, these fees have not been paid despite the fact that I have been confirmed as eligible for funding. As you can imagine, I am in a constant state of anxiety, and stress because of this. All of my friends and colleagues have received their results, and the lack of results is having implications for finding employment, household bills and so on. The call centres at Student Finance are completely indifferent to my issues - my case is passed from department to department to department - all of these departments are apparently non-contactable by phone. I was told the funds would be paid to my university by today. When I rang I was told to expect to wait another two weeks before my issues were acknowledged. The only way you can make a complaint is by email. The financial ombudsman said there is literally nothing they can offer in terms of help as they seem to be a self contained entity. The staff on the phone refuse point blank to escalate the complaint, I've waited 4 times to speak to a team leader with no avail. And I've worked in plenty of call centres over the years so I'm pretty good at playing ball. The three emails I have sent in the last 10 days have all been ignored. Is there any advice you can give or any assistance you can offer? Yours sincerely,
  4. I began a full time PGCE at Sheffield Hallam Uni in Sept 2010 but was forced to withdraw in October. I had several issues about the course that fell on deaf ears a number of times and was forced into deferring because it was clear they would not be resolved. I was advised (wrongly) by a member of staff that I could defer to the following year, who then withdrew the statement once I had left. I have since been ordered to pay tuition fees, and repay all loans/grants for my time on the course and have been threatened with recovery action by both the university finance department and the SLC. I have lodged a formal complaint with the university but they are dragging their heels about resolving the issue and have not been in touch since before Christmas. I feel that it is totally unacceptable to be expected to pay the £2500 in total that they are asking for when I would still have been a student and well on my way to gaining the qualification I needed had the university not made a total mess of things. Where do I go for advice in such matters? Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Angry SHU student!
