1. Hi, I have just renewed my car insurance and the provider is requesting copies of both mine and my partners driving licences!! Is this law? can I refuse? Im not hiding anything, I just dont like it when businesses start making my life more difficult with all this crap. Now I have to dig out these items, photo copy them and post them. Why dont they just deal with this direct with DVLA instead of making it my problem!! Anyway, can I just say No. Ta
2. We have lived in the same privately rented flat since 2012. We were in an 18 month tenancy, then signed a further 12 month tenancy. After that we decided we would rather go on to a periodic/rolling tenancy as we were fed up of the fees each time we renewed. The letting agent tried to discourage us from doing this but we stood firm. We have been on a periodic tenancy for 12 months now. If we had signed another tenancy agreement 12 months ago, it would be time to renew around about now. Two weeks ago we received an email telling us our tenancy was up for renewal and asking we wanted to sign another one. I replied to say we are happy to remain on our current rolling contract. A few days later we received another email attaching a memorand of renewal and requesting £70. The only difference going forwards will be the rent increase, which we also had last year with no need to sign anything. We have never been asked to sign a memorandum of renewal by previous letting agents - it has just gone on to a rolling contract. When the rent has gone up, that has been that - we have just paid it with no need to sign anything. Can someone tell me if the memorandum of renewal is above board? Do we have to pay it? What is the benefit of us signing this document versus being on a rolling contract? For background we have recently annoyed our letting agent as we had been waiting for a broken window to be repaired for four weeks (totally broken so totally insecure). After it had still not been repaired and the letting agency stopped answering emails about it (but did chase us to renew our tenancy), I contacted the landlord directly to ask if they would mind chasing it with the agent. It was finally repaired last week. Any advice will be really appreciated. Thanks!
3. Hi all Coming back from a year away from Sky for BB/LR as they were unwilling to offer a deal in 2014. When I was on the phone discussing renewing my TV, which was also out, as well as "upgrading" to BB/LR, she quoted a price of £32.01 for everything. Now the woman I was talking to was nice enough however seemed a bit "doozie", sounded like she didnt know what she was talking about. So, to keep myself right, and hopefully they were recording the call, I asked several times before she done her legal bumf to confirm that indeed it was £32.01 for everything, DTV/BB/LR and she said yes. So, I check my my sky page and in the subscriptions page it shows DTV renewed, BB/LR to start 30/7/15, and shows my next 3 months subscriptions amounts to be £32.01 every month. So it looks like I am getting everything for £32.01. However in the event something has went pear shaped and in a months time I get reverted back to the bog standard price, do I have a comeback?
4. Please help advice me. The permit expired on the 3rd , I received a PCN on the 11th. I never got a reminder as it is anew sheme in my area in Haringey, it was said to have been put in for spurs and help us resident prevent pp parking in our roads during match days. I do not remember seeing any clear directives in the consultation process or the 1st permit isued to me about ensuring I renew and telling or giving me guidance that I have to renew and if I don't what the consequences are. I appealed he 1st ticket and it was declined and I then got a notice to owner and the fee had doubled now £130. I do not know what to do, can some one please help and advice me on how to dispute this. This is a free permit for resident that is suddenly going to cost me £130.00 potentially. I have till Thursday the 9th when my 28 days run out for challenging the notice to owner. I am really upset about this. This is just another way of Haringey council ripping off its Residents. I found a judgement on Barnet being found in the wrong by a judge for not sending reminders out to their residents and Barnet had to cancel all PCN and refund charges where people had paid. but I couldn't find the case law and I am not also sure if this will help my challenge. Please advise. Many thanks
5. hi just a quick question do i have to add up and put esa/jsa/housing benefit in total income for the tax credit renewal? thanks
6. Here's a warning to anyone thinking of taking out a policy with this company..... I trawled the Internet in 2011 and found the 'best pet insurance' to be VetsMediCover with plenty of positive feedback. The company advertised pet insurance policies on the basis of 'One Pet, One Price' and for dogs, was not breed or age related other than the dog had to be under 8 years old at the started of the policy. There was one price for small dogs and another for large dogs and this was the reason why I chsoe the company to insure my dog. I took out a 'lifelong' policy for my dog at £252 or £21 a month in 2011. I made one small claim during the year and renewed the policy ay £384 or £32 a month in 2012. My dog developed heart failure earlier this year and now requires medication for the rest of his life, his prognosis is six months. VedsMediCover has paid for the medication to date with no problems. Just before renewal next month.... I received an apologetic letter from the company stating that my dog was now classed as a 'select' breed (whatever that is) and the premium would rise to £720 on renewal. I received a second letter the following day stating that my premium would now be doubled again from £720 to £1440 or £120 a month. In addition, as my dog was over 7 years old, I will have to pay 20% of any future vet treatment in additon to the £95 excess. The have complained to the company, and received the offer of a small reduction to £1332 or £111 a month. I believe the company is trying to deter me from renewing my policy to avoid paying for the ongoing medication that my dog needs. The new premium is actually more expensive than the cost of the ongoing drugs he has received over the last few months. It seems bizarre that the first renewal figure of £720 has been *exactly* doubled to £1440 and the company can offer no explanation for the arbitrary doubling (think of a number, then double it, perhaps). The point I am making is that I was sold a 'lifelong' policy in 2011 and was told at that time that the basic terms and conditions of such a policy could not be changed in future years. A new underwriter (Qudos from Denmark) has taken over as the insurer and has retrospectively introduced 'select' breeds and an age limit where formerly (at the time of taking out thte policy) there was none. I believe this is not withing the law (i.e. to sell a life product, then significantly change the basic terms and conditions). This is going to be refered to the Financial Ombudsman. A 400% increase in premium renewal on a 'lifelong' pet insurance policy is unreasonable, unfair, unrealistic and great for bad publicity. My advice to anyone thinking of buying pet insurance is to AVOID VetsMedicover at all costs as an insurer, as they most likely will change the terms and conditions AFTER you buy it.
7. Hello Everyone, My friend has her first work programme appointment on the 24th June 2013 and was unable to attend due to being very anxious, being sick and had panic attacks! I rang Ingeus and spoke to her Employment Advisor, he was busy when I rang so I left a message that is was important he call back because it was to do with my friend's appointment and that she was unable to attend that day! He did call back and I duly answered the phone call, I told him why my friend was unable to attend and if she can have another appointment date and that I will come with her, I've explained about her anxiety and panic attacks and also told him her advisor at the Job Centre knows of her circumstances as I've had to cancel an appointment she had with her job centre advisor before, I requested that my friend will need a private room as she will not cope being in a room full of people! All what we asked was granted and I also told Ingeus advisor to send me a letter to confirm my telephone conversation with him! Today a letter arrived there was no mention of speaking to me nor mentioned about requesting for a private room all the letter says! 'We have attempted to contact you by telephone but was unable to reach you. We have therefore arranged an appointment for you on such a date etc, etc. I couldn't believe what I was reading' Good job I wrote a letter confirming my telephone conversation with him on the 24th June and mentioned everything we spoke about, I've kept a copy of course and sent the letter to him! I need to write a letter to him about the letter I've received today not mentioning anything of our telephone conversations, my brain has gone pickled at the moment and I want to be careful how I write the letter! He has lied and also not stating the fact of out conversations has anyone come across this sort of problem with Ingeus it will be good to know about them a bit! Thanks helen
8. Last year, having endured poor signal for some time and then receiving a clearly misleading marketing email in September 2014 that Vodafone subsequently refused to honour, I registered my intention to cancel my Vodafone contract. It was due to expire on January 25. Having subsequently received a call from the retentions team later in September, I agreed to a new contract on provision that I received an early upgrade of my handset and a reduced tariff. And so all was well again with better signal, and an early upgrade. However, on Sunday January 25 2015 at noon, my phone ceased to receive any mobile signal. Believing this to be an issue with my bill (I don't owe anything apart from my current bill, which isn't yet due to be paid) I tried to log into my account online to be told that my mobile number was no longer registered. I can only assume that the initial request I made in September 2014 to cancel my contract has been actioned despite my subsequent agreement to remain with Vodafone and renew my contract. This is not the first time this has happened, and the exact same scenario presented itself on my last upgrade also, and I was without phone service for more than one week. Normal customer service channels have been a joke, and they either don't understand or choose not to understand and are accusing me of cancelling and being in breach of my contract, which in utter muck, and trying to charge me the cost of the handset. I've since made an email complaint to the CEO office, and have a reference number. However, they insist on trying to call me on my wife's phone (which is also with Vodafone and is/was linked to my account) which I can't access as she works away. I've tried calling the direct line number they left me to call back, but I'm not sitting in another 30+ minute queue any longer, as I've tried three times already and I'm not getting anywhere. An email response to the original complaint will just trigger another reference number so little point in doing that. An absolute shambles of a company, and I'm regretting sticking around for another two years. The ombudsman beckons!
9. I have had an ongoing issue with British Gas since my renewal dropped through the letter box in September 2014 for £340/yr. A fairly simple telephone call you might imagine to negotiate a better deal to compare to competitors at around £200/yr for the same level of cover. Anyway, two telephone calls that failed to result in a new price, due to "computer issues". Followed by various methods of them delivering the same £340/yr renewal quote with no explanation. Plus my complaints via on-line message through the website and to various complaints/customer service email addresses has still not resulted in a resolution. The most annoying fact is after the initial phone calls they said I would continue to be insured, and they would take the direct debit at the monthly amount stated. Now they never did this, so i would assume I am not insured, but they have not responded to my questions to confirm this. Please give some thought before you take one of these policies, and not just with BG by the sounds of it. I am going to try and find a good recommended boiler service guy and hope that any breakdowns and repairs are not too painful. Thanks for reading..
10. Looking for some speedy help here. I received my autorenewal reminder from RSAechoice last week, completely online broker, have been trying to renew online all week, to no avail as their website says sorry we have an error, try again later. It has been saying this all week from every browser and computer i try so i know it is their end. Have tried phoning their 0844 helpline, put on hold for 15m then rings out. Tried this weekend again, they are now closed. Tried live chat, they cannot renew premiums over chat and speak to you like a robot telling you to renew online or phone the 0844 number even though i am telling them they dont work. Problem is my car insurance runs out tomorrow night. I guess i can just phone up a new insurer tomorrow, but will be forced to take whatever is out there and current best quote i have is a lot higher than the renewal.. Any advice???!! Where do i stand if i let my insurance lapse and try again to call them on Monday morning.. ..can they reinstate it from when it lapsed if its only 24 hrs since lapse? What are the implications- i would not drive the car on monday of course. Thanks
11. Well going off my experience there is no such thing. I was previously getting Lower Care Rate. I posted my renewal claim on */oct and got a reply through the letter box 9 days later. No doctors notes sent or surgeons appointments etc. I have now got Lower Care Rate awarded indefiinatey. They just based the decision on the info on the form I in had filled in, yet previously they contacted my GP and Surgeon for info. Just goes to show what an absolute joke this system is !!, when other people much worse off than me get turned down.
12. Hello, first timer here. I'm getting repeated calls from a company called 'Commercial Reduction Services'. Their story is that the govenment has recently passed a law that allows utility companies to auto-renew contracts and put the prices up at the same time. They wanted me to sign an electronic document (an LOA) which would get me out of this. I delete these when they send them. Having been fast-talked by a utility broker when I set up my business I've learnt the hard way not to agree to anything offered by door-to-door or telephone sales people, and the (brief) research I've done talks about power companies dropping auto-renewal last year, and my contract still has 18 months to go anyway. The fact that they keep hassling me makes me suspicious of their motives, but still, there's that nagging worry. Has anyone else been contacted by these people? They can't really be determined do-gooders, surely? Cheers Mark
13. Dear All, I have been charged to cancel (set-up fees) an automatic renewal of a home contents policy I did not want. Budget Insurance claim that they sent me a letter 17.09.14 to remind me that my policy was due for renewal. I absolutely did not receive any correspondence from them. I received an email from them at 18:52 the day before to say that the policy would renew at midnight (giving me around 5 hours to contact them). After complaining over the telephone, they said they would not charge £35.00, but would instead charge me £17.00 to cancel the renewal (or rather the set-up fees). It might not be a great deal of money, but it is to a full-time student like me. Anything I can do? All the best, Milly
14. Hi there folks, just wondering if you could help me a little. I have had a account with k & co (previously great universal) for over 10 years now. After having my laptop repaired i asked to extend the guarantee which works out just as much for a year as it was for the previous 4 years (but that's another matter) Anyway, whilst in email conversation with a customer service rep, he mentioned that all insurances automatically renew when the policy ends. I was totally unaware of this and could well still be paying insurance for items i no longer have!!! Ive read the small print on the back of insurance policy's i was sent and it only states that guarantee will automatically renew if it has been extended yet the customer service rep states all insurances do it. Im obviously digging deeper into this this and have demanded that they tell me exactly what insurances are still running and what is on the auto re-newel. If it turns out that im still paying for items upto 10years on and wasn't made aware of the automatic renewal system, do you think there is any way of re-claiming the money back? Im livid as nowhere in the documents or insurance policy does it state the renewal happens with all insured items! Thanks in advance, Amy.
15. Insurance companies could be forced to provide clearer information on renewal quotes, after coming under pressure from consumer groups. When consumers are informed of a new premium, they are not usually reminded what they paid previously. As a result, some customers may not even be aware that the cost of their insurance policy is going up. Now the City regulator is drawing up new rules to ensure renewal quotes include previous premiums as well. That would enable policy-holders to see whether, and by how much, their bill had risen. The Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) decision follows pressure from consumer groups, including Which? The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has proposed the change itself, and has written to the FCA suggesting it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-28229282
16. Hi all, New here, first post. I live in Greece and have a Barclays a/c in the UK where my Fire Service pension is paid in. I use the ATM in Greece and online banking for everyday transactions. My Debit Card runs out in August and although I have asked if my card will be renewed all I have been told is....it is in the post. Is there a proper telephone number to contact in the UK to confirm this or do I have to spend hours and money being moved from piller to post to get an answer. I ask this because many ex-pats here in Greece are being refused renewal from various Banks (Santander in particular) because they think we are money laundering and a bad risk. Thanks in advance
17. Does anyone know some legalize with regards to a memorandum of renewal for an AST. My anniversary is up and the new LL wants to increase by 6% & the period is for a further 6 months. Not a problem. Does this mean I have a " new" 6 month contract or is this just a rolling periodic contract where I can still be given 1 month's notice, instead of 2. Other tenants in my block have been told that if they don't accept the increase & sign ; then a month's notice will be issued. For the record only 1 week's notice of the increase/memo was given. Secondly the new LL bought the property 6 months ago but kept us in situ with the old LL contract. Can they now extend a contract with us that clearly has the old LL details. We presume that when they bought the block they didn't want to issue a new contract for whatever reason but none of us have a signed agreement with the new LL. Also the memo states this is a 6 month extension based on the contract signed last year in August 2013 between themselves ( herein called the LL) & ourselves( the tenant). How can they claim to be the LL for a contract signed before they even bought the property? Finally some of us have looked at our contracts & deposits & have discovered the old LL secured our deposits 40 days after we moved in; this has now been updated to show the new LL details but only since Feb 2014 when the property was sold/bought. Are they now liable even though original deposits were dealt with by someone else.
18. Hi just wondering if anyone may have any info on this. 19. I need a little advice please, my step daughter has just rented a new flat. After moving in the Agent said "are you wanting to stay here more than 12 months?" she replied I would like to. The agent said "because there will be a £95 renewal fee and we can take it out of your deposit you paid " I thought that this was illegal to take money from a deposit, isnt it supposed to be lodged with an independent company and only payable after the SHT has ended.... I will be grateful for any advice please.
20. Hi everyone, first off thanks for taking the time to read this. I have done some searches on this topic on this forum and other places, but I'm not sure where I stand in regards to the wording on my contract. I'm a LL from London, and getting increasing frustrated with the LA and their renewal fees. Fair enough, I'm a bit silly not have negotiated the contract in the first place, but my tenants are staying on for their third year now, and the renewal fees are nearly £1000, which is ridiculous for the amount of work they are doing (getting a piece of paper signed). So, I'm thinking of letting the contract roll into an STP, I was under the impression that no fees should be charged in this scenario, but in my contract with the LA, the following is worded: "The landlord should be aware that renewal or continuation as a periodic Tenancy is subject to an additional fee plus VAT as shown in Schedule 1 above whether or not we as your Agent negotiate on your behalf. If you prefer to negotiate any renewal personally our fees for the Letting Service will continue to be payable according to Schedule 1 above for the duration of the time the Tenants occupies the premises" Do I have a leg to stand on? Should I seek legal advice? Surely they can't charge me for not actually doing *anything*?!? Once again, thanks for reading this for me, any help is most appreciated.
21. Consumer Action Group received the following email from someone who renewed his tax disc online.. Please do be vigilant when using these "Look alike sites" Check that you have typed in the correct webpage and look for any sneaky sign that you will be charged. We have previously highlighted similar issues with Look alike Passport and Driving Licence renewal websites
22. went onto the GOV.UK site to renew tax disc queried this when i was charged £165 and not £125, Was told by DVLA that i had used a tax disc renewal service that charges £40.00 for renewing tax disc. Debit on bankstatement came up as taxdisc.direct.co.uk Any one else had experience of this? Registered this with the DVLA as a complaint and also with citizens advice consumer line.
23. Hi I stupidly sent my ESA renewal form back in late (about 10 days) and my ESA has been stopped. I am having Mandatory Reconsideration and am still waiting for a decision (3 weeks). I sent my form back late as I truly had thought I had already sent it in as I was under considerable pressure after Christmas. I receive a form to claim DLA and my ESA renewal form on the same day, filled one in, posted back on time and just forgot about them. Then, I received a letter saying my ESA was now stopped. After many phone calls, when my form was at ATOS, with the wrong office or just couldn't be found, I was told my reasons for returning the form were unacceptable and that I should apply for Mandatory Reconsideration, which I did. At the time, my son with Schitzophrenia was poorly (over Christmas and January), I was still visiting my mother with Dementia daily and also had an recurrent infection in my new, transplanted kidney (which was painful and so I was getting no real sleep). This decision, however, had been made before they received my form, which I filled in in a panic when I realised I had forgotten it. My question is, can they really stop my money when I have been told that my medical situation is not the problem, but that the reasons for sending my renewal form in late had been rejected? I have been told that the Reconsideration Office is unlikely to overturn the initial decision and that it is very likely that I will have to appeal and that may take 9-10 months. I am in a terrible panic and think this government want everyone except their ilk to just disappear and stop sponging (if only I had an expense account.....) Can they really stop my money if I still fulfill the criteria to receive ESA? Hoping someone out their can help. I thought I was at the end of my tether at the end of January - little did I know what the DWP are capable of. Many thanks for reading all this.
24. Hi All, I know tenancy contract renewals are something that have been discussed here quite a bit previously, but I'm unclear on a point relating to this case three years ago between OFT and Foxtons. My girlfriend has just been advised by Foxtons that they plan to deduct £96.00 from her deposit because around 6 months ago the fixed term agreement lapsed into a periodic one (monthly). At the time all parties agreed this was fine. My girlfriend did sign a form from Foxtons on taking the flat, that had a clause that read: "If the tenancy is renewed, we will make a charge of £80 + VAT to cover our administration". From what I can tell, doing nothing and just letting the tenancy automatically go into a periodic one doesn't constitute as renewing, but I'm not a lawyer! They basically have done no 'administration'. My girlfriend did query in general why they were charging a renewal fee and the response was: "The renewal fee is charged whenever a tenancy passes its original tenancy length. As this tenancy became a periodic tenancy you stayed longer than the original end date of the 27th May 2013." It's also suspicious that they are taking it out of the deposit (or at least trying to), which surely isn't for these sorts of items. Does anyone have any experience here? It seems like total bs to me. I was reading about that OFT v Foxtons case but that seemed more related to admin fees being charged to landlords rather than the tenants. I'm not sure how anyone can get away with charging almost £100 (or anything in fact) for doing precisely no work. Before she goes in guns blazing it would be good to get a clearer picture of where she stands. Thanks in advance
