  4. It took them 6 weeks but Halifax gave me all my money back £284... They initially offered me 40% back but when I turned down their offer they offered me the full amount. From my experienence it might be better to wait a week or so extra before sending them a court summons if you don't want to shell out for court fees. Anyway good luck everyone with your claims! Thanks to the site, donation coming your way
  5. The issue is not really whether the banks are right or wrong; if they convince a Government agency that they can't afford what is required of them then the Government will have to act I have no idea what HSBCs profits were last year, but lets say their share of banking charges are 10% thats £1.8billion they have taken, probably unlawfully, over the last 6 years, lets say 10% of people eventually ask for their money back; are HSBC going to hand over £180million? If the the High Street banks come to the conclusion that they can no longer steam the tide of people claiming back their money, then they will ask the Government to step in under the threat of redundancies. It would be very interesting how it will be played in the press as it could be shown as 'evil banks stealing peoples money' or it could go the other way as 'people who have mismanaged their money now causing bank staff to lose their jobs'. I have no simpathy for the banks and hope that they abolish charges which penalise those with the smallest bank balances. But one has to consider what they might do rather than pay back hefty amounts of money to their customers
  6. thanks the accounts been raided by Halifax first so there's nothing to take!
  7. If the banks are earning £3 billion a year from penalty charges and people can claim back up to 6 years thats £18 billion (not including interest) If the banks feel they can no longer stem the tide of claims for refunds of penalty charges will they not ask the Government to step in? If the banks manage to convince the powers that be they can't afford £18 billion then the Government may have no option but to introduce legislation limiting the period in which you can reclaim your penalty charges? I could be totally wrong, but I don't feel the Government will stand by as the high street banks bring in sweeping redundancies to cover a tide of bank charge refunds... As I say it may never come to this, and I'm sure the banks will play it smarter rather than letting it come to this stage, but its a case for getting your claim in sooner rather than later Anyway let me know your thoughts Tom
  8. Ok so I havn't been 'done' by Halifax as much as a lot of users of this site, but I am right royally pissed off! My girlfriend and I opened a joint account to pay bills and the like 6 months ago, on one dark night I bought cinema tickets online for £12.50 and icecream at the cinema for £6, these took us over our limit and Halifax charged us £30 + £30 + £28 for these transactions, whats more their charges cancelled nearly all the money we put into the that month and we incurred another £60 for paying £40 of Gas and Elec. Our charges stand at £284 in 6 months; we've only had about £750 of transactions go through the account so over a third are Halifax charges... Anyway I wrote them almost the standard letter from the forum (thanks ) to which they replied (took about 2 weeks) with the standard blurb and offered £106 back. This wound me up even more and I then sent them a rather longer letter (today) telling them that I want everything or nothing I believe they deliberately authorised that £12.5 in order to charge me £30, I have a Barclays graduate account and if I don't have money in it they decline the transaction, why don't halifax do the same? I have put word documents online if anyone wants them, the Halifax Response isn't there yet but I'll put it up http://www.thomasjeffs.co.uk/halifax/HalifaxPlc.doc http://www.thomasjeffs.co.uk/halifax/halifaxresponse.pdf http://www.thomasjeffs.co.uk/halifax/HalifaxPlc2.doc
