  1. Story Back in 2019, my wife and I identified that our roof slates were splitting / delaminating all over our roof. This is a house built in 2001. We obtained 3 separate quotes to remove all existing slates and re-slate our entire roof. During this process, we were informed that apparently the slates we had were known to have a manufacturing defect in a particular batch. We contacted the company in question, and after providing proof we had their product on our roof, they kindly agreed to replace all the slates for free. We ended up going for the middle quote (N&R Roofing), but I couldn't tell you now exactly why we did. The quote was detailed and did clearly specify complete removal of all existing slates, and replacement with new slates. Due to the house being taller than average, we needed scaffolding all around the house. The work took place as planned, though no protection was given to the roof while the slates were off. We had rain, which wet a number of ceilings in the house. N&R roofing were fairly dismissive at the time, and their advice was just that it should just "dry out", but if needed to "paint over it". They made no offer to rectify this damage, which even now remains. N&R stated they completed their work, and from what we could see of the roof from ground level (we cannot see all around the house due to other houses / other people's land preventing the necessary views from a distance), it seems they had done everything as planned. We paid as per the quote. Fast forward to 2022, and as we were having leaking into a bedroom, we got quotes for someone to come out and rectify this. The company that came ended up doing some work on our chimneys, and while they were on our roof, identified issues with the coping stones that required work to rectify them, and identified 2 patches on the roof (at the back - cannot be seen from ground level) where old delaminated slates still existed. These clearly stood out from the new slates around them. These issues were shown to us directly through pictures of the areas in question, so even though we couldn't get up there ourselves, we could see what they meant. One section is where the slates ar supposed to go under the coping stones. As I understand it, these should have been properly cleared out and the stones lifted so new slates could be put on, before the stones were replaced. Instead, the old slates were left in place there. I have since contacted N&R Roofing to ask them to come and look at the issue. They initially agreed, but then came on a day when I said I could be available without calling ahead and confirming I was in - so I missed them by 30 mins. When I emailed them back to state I was in the rest of the day, they said they would not return as it was a 1 hour trip each way for them. I cannot understand why you would not call ahead in such a situation. N&R Roofing has failed to return subsequently to take a look. When I chased them by email, their claim was that they arranged for £10k of free slates, and then put them on our roof for "next to nothing". They then went on to claim that they had "inspected" our roof when they came and had noted that pointing that had been re-done poorly (I assume he means the coping stones, rather than separate wall re-pointing we had done in 2021 that has nothing to do with the roof). What is interesting is that we have an electric gate, so either N&R Roofing were unable to see the roof areas in question (which are at the back of the house and not visible from the road), or they climbed over the wall and trespassed without my knowledge (and still would not have been able to see the areas in question unless they brought a tall ladder with them). I have disputed N&R Roofing in their claim of costs as we obtained a fair competitive itemised quote, and we paid what was asked. N&R have not responded, but said they would "arrange something" when they returned from work in London after 6 weeks. That response was in Oct 2022, so I should have heard from them mid-Nov 2022. It's now the end of Jan 2023 and still nothing. I have sent one last email offering a chance to come and look at the roof and discuss how N&R Roofing will rectify the issue. However, I am concerned at the idea of letting them near our roof again. If they didn't do the job right the first time, there's no guarantee it's going to be done properly this time. The fact this has occurred, and the fact N&R Roofing have not been particularly great in their response leaves me lacking faith. The cynic in me is concerned they could deliberately damage our roof while up there, and we would have no idea until we start to have (expensive to fix) problems. As far as I can see, N&R Roofing don't seem to have any accreditations / memberships displayed on their website. This would suggest there is no easy complaints / mediation process that could be accessed? I'm not sure what our options are and am looking for advice please. My thoughts were: 1. Get quotes from other reputable companies on the cost to fix. 2. Get a roofing surveyor opinion on whether the slates in question are truly old ones left in place, or just 2 freak patches or unusual wear. 3. Look at a small claims court, though this is not cheap and there is no guarantee you get your money back even if successful (and I guess a potential risk of some kind of retaliation from N&R Roofing). What would others advise please? Have we overlooked something?
