I moved into rented accommodation in September last year with 3 other tenants. Recently we received a letter from a debt collection agency saying that we owe about £1000. We have also received a letter addressed to the landlord from Thames Water saying that there is a £700 outstanding debt in addition to this years fee of about £300. What should we do? We are moving out in 3 weeks. Obviously we are not liable for the outstanding bill but are worried that if we pay what we owe we will get dragged into the mess. We are also concerned our landlord will just take the outstanding bill out of our deposit.
