  1. I recently purchased a second hand car from a private individual acting as a car dealer. I say acting because he was selling from his home and kept the log book as a dealer, "so as not to increase the number of previous owners". The car is 7 years old, has done 90000 miles and was advertised as having a full MOT and tax. The advertised price was £2900. I saw the advert on a popular car website on the Friday night and arranged to look at the car the following day. When I arrived it had 1 months tax and a 3 days of MOT left. The seller said that he'd only just put the car on the web and had intended to put it in for MOT on the Monday. Bearing this in mind we agreed on a lower price (£2725), I paid in cash but got a reciept and drove away. A couple of days later I was looking in the boot and found that the spare wheel well was full of water, and that the spare wheel and jack were covered in rust. I put the car in for its MOT and found that it needed new break disks, pads and a new exhaust - costing £440, which I paid and put down to experience. I realise I should have gotten him to do the MOT before buying, but in hindsight I couldn't be sure that the work would have been done properly. Even more worryingly, over the next week I found the car intermittently loosing power at very inconvenient, and potentially dangerous times, for example when pulling away at a roundabout. If I'd bought this car from a dealership I would take it back and demand my money back, but as the guy is to all intents and purposes a private seller, is there anything I can do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
