Proposed coroners and justice bill amends Data Protection Act 1998 Proposed coroners and justice bill amends Data Protection Act 1998 21 January 2009 The proposed coroners and justice bill, which has now been placed before parliament, calls for some sweeping changes to data sharing regulations. Under the plans, the Data Protection Act 1998 would be amended in order to allow for wider sharing of information. Proposals to change the Data Protection Act include strengthening the inspection powers of the information commissioner. The bill will have its second reading in the House of Commons this month and is expected to provide some clarification of data protection legislation. Wider sharing of information will enable public authorities to make an 'information sharing order' for the dissemination of personal information if it is considered necessary in the interests of the public good. Under current rules, it is more difficult for public bodies to share information but the coroners and justice bill would allow for greater amounts of data to be shared between organisations by lifting certain restrictions. -
