  1. Thanks for all that really helpful information unclebulgaria. I'll look into what you said about going bankrupt in Denmark as he has no assets anywhere. Once again thank you so much for your help. Jo
  2. Hi My partner split up last year with his ex. They owned a house together in Denmark which they sold, leaving them with negative equity of £70k. The debt has been split between the two of them. My partner's ex is paying her part of the debt and me and my partner have moved to the UK. He has part time work but doesn't earn much. We have now received a letter from a UK debt collection agency (at our old address, not our current address where we have lived for 6 months) asking for immediate payment of the debt and threatening to take legal proceedings. Does anyone have any advice on what we do next? Do we have to deal with the debt collection agency? I know the rules are slightly different as he's from Denmark. Many thanks in advance. Jo
  3. Hi Gringo I saw your problem on Consumer Action Group about your Danish Mortgage. The same thing has just happened to my partner, he split up with his ex, they sold the house and lost £70k on the property. The mortgage company are now chasing him and he's living in the UK. If you don't mind me asking, how did it all turn out with your mortgage in the end? He's worried they'll make him bankrupt. Thanks in advance. Joanna
  4. Hi I checked and he is certified through Clerkenwell Court in London so I'll get on to it tomorrow. Thanks for your advice.
  5. Just a quick note to say thank you to everyone who gave me advice regarding a baliff. I wrote to the baliff company and asked for a break down of their fees which were £200 more than the debt I owed. I also sent a copy to Westminster Council. I received another baliff notice on Friday so I called them and asked again for a breakdown. Miraculously my debt all of a sudden reduced by £200! They decided they were not going to charge me any fees and said that I could pay back the debt at £50 per month. I'm going to report the baliff to the courts, as he demanded money that I didn't actually owe. Once again thanks everyone.
  6. Thanks Tony, I'll make sure I do that. You've really got to question why someone would take up harrassing and intimidating people for a living. Especially a woman and her daughter living on their own. I am dreading the morning, probably won't sleep much. Thanks for your help.
  7. Thanks for that advice, that's good to know, I will go into the council and pay the bill. Starting to feel a bit better about the situation now.
  8. Hi I called the council to try and do this but they said it's out of their hands and in the bailiffs. It seems the only person I can deal with is Dave the menace. I was in floods of tears, but still I have to deal with this bloke Dave.
  9. I have read the fact sheet, very helpful thank you. I will write to the company tomorrow asking for a breakdown, I think they've charged far too much around £200 so far, for two letters and a visit. The bailiff company Equitas have said that I have to deal with the actual bailiff that comes to my house and pay him. I've contacted him three times so far and he either put the phone down on me or didn't respond to my messages. He left the notice for me on the pavement outside for all my neighbours to see and didn't even put it through the door. Now I'm too scared to speak to him, he sounded like a real bully on the phone. I will try and deal with the company or the council instead.
  10. Hi there Thanks for your advice. I'm not on any benefits, but have been signed off work by my doctor for one month for severe depression (partly due to this situation).
  11. Hi I owe £519 in council tax, and this debt has been passed to the bailiffs. They sent me two letters last week and have said I have to deal directly with the bailiff a man called Dave and not with Equita the bailiff company dealing with the case. I called the bailiff on his mobile on Friday to find out how much I owe he was very rude and then put the phone down on me. I then texted him to offer £500 cash that day and that I could pay the rest (another £200 his charges) next week. He didn't respond to that message. I went out this morning to go to an appointment and the bailiff had been and left a Bailiff Removal letter for me in the street, on the pavement, not through my door and he hadn't buzzed on my door bell for a response. I have called and left another message for him today and still no response. I am a woman living on my own and suffer from quite bad depression, I am absolutely terrified of this man turning up on my doorstep, I don't have the full amount and I am at my wits end. Can anyone give me any advice on what I can do? Thanks
  12. Hi Pete Great, that's fantastic news! I'll get on with my letter writing today. Jo
  13. Thanks for that Tilly. I'll send that off tomorrow.
